Blue Skies and Sunshine… then sleep.
Oh my goodness, y’all, it has finally happened! Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is open at Walt Disney World and I can’t wait to ride it on our next trip in September! Like many lifelong Disney fans, Splash Mountain was one of my favorite rides and as much as I am sad for the original to go, I think this re-theme is a much more relevant story for today’s visitors. In honor of the opening of this re-imagined attraction, here is a bedroom design inspired by the star of the ride and the favorite movie, Princess Tiana.
This design is a little bit of all the best parts of Princess and the Frog: some New Orleans French Quarter influence, some 1920s vintage, and clever nods to Tiana’s friends she meets along her wild bayou adventure.
Color Scheme and Mood
- Colors: Deep Emerald Green, sage green, goldenrod yellow, light french blue, espresso brown and cream
- Mood: Vintage with some bayou inspired glam
Bed Frame and Headboard
Let’s start our Tiana bedroom design with this beautiful vintage, two-poster headboard and bed frame. I love the curved shape of the headboard. It reminds me of a wood version of Tiana’s bed from the movie. The rich, deep brown wood color brings in a historic feel adding to the 1920s style of this room. The bed is designed with a noise-free frame and is recommended for use with a 10 inch thick mattress.
Nightstands
I am a sucker for a unique accent piece and these nightstands make me want to swoon. The contrasting creamy, beige color with the deep brown wash which ties into the bedframe color adds a lot of interest to the overall design. These nightstands are not just beautiful though, they also have 2 large storage drawers to hide away your things for a clean look for daily life.
Dresser
I just couldn’t help myself with the fun furniture pairings in this design. To bring in some of that deep bayou inspiration and add a pop of color, I added this beautiful green 6 drawer dresser. The ornate, turned leg details on this piece tie in with the posters of the bed frame and add another vintage layer to this bedroom. The dresser is great for any bedroom but is small enough to provide great storage in a smaller sleeping space.
Accent chair
For our last furniture piece, I love this cozy and stylish accent chair if you want some extra seating options in the bedroom. Add a couple of these to a lounge area or even just a single chair in a corner for private space to decompress at the end of the day. The curves in the skirting of the chair tie back to the curves of the headboard and the color compliments the nightstands. The nailhead design and turned wood legs also pull in the southern, vintage feel of the New Orleans French Quarter.
Floor Lamp
This tall floor lamp is a beautiful gold finish adds a small splash of glam to the room. The 3 globes-1 bigger and 2 smaller- remind me of the scene in the Princess and the Frog movie where the firefly Ray is united with his love Evangeline amongst the stars. (This part of the movie gets me EVERY.SINGLE.TIME…. Bring on the waterworks!).
Rug
Now let’s jump into the soft goods for this room design! I love the style of this rug. The green and golden yellow color marry in the beautiful vibrant colors of Tiana’s world. The vintage design plays off the other ornate detailing on the furniture bringing out a richness of patterns very reminiscent of the French Quarter. The features of this rug are amazing as well. Its machine washable, has a non-slip backing, strengthened edging to avoid fraying, and is super soft. It also comes in a large variety of sizes so you can customize the rug to your space.
Curtains
For the curtain details, we are going to pull inspiration from that 1920s, southern timeframe again and add these beautiful cream lace curtain panels. What I love most about these curtains is the variety of lengths you can choose from to truly customize the level of effect these will have on your design. The lace curtains alone will provide a small screen of privacy to your windows while still letting a lot of natural light in during the day. If you want or need a curtain that provides some light protection, you can also layer these curtains on a dual curtain rod with a blackout curtain to still keep the vintage inspiration of the lace in the design.
Bedding
Comforter Set
Not going to lie, y’all, I have a small obsession with styling bedding for spaces and the bedding for this Tiana bedroom was so fun to coordinate. Let’s start with this gorgeous and luxurious looking Golden Yellow, crushed velvet comfort set. The crushed velvet and subtle tufting in this comforter add just enough interest against the more ornate rug and furniture pieces while also giving a slight amount of glam. Tiana is a princess after all and all princesses deserve a little sheen and shine to their bedrooms. The set comes with the comforter and 4 accent pillow shams in 2 different sizes. This allows you more options for styling your bed!
Sheet set
The sheets for this design play into a somewhat monochromatic look to the bedding but the flower detailing adds a level of fun which again ties into our lace curtains and vintage rug. The foliage colors tie in some of the green accents we have added so far but also add some other colors we will bring into the space later in the design with some of our decor pieces. These sheets are microfiber and have deep pockets for thicker mattresses making them a great option for easy maintenance of any size bed.
Bed Blanket
The last piece of our bedding is the lush emerald green bed blanket. I love 2 things specifically about this blanket. The first is that it is plush and looks like an absolute dream to sleep with. The second is the art deco style leaf pattern. This pattern reminded me of art deco styling which was super popular in the 1920s but also reminded me of the trees in the Louisiana Bayou. Best of all this blanket is machine washable.
Throw Pillows
Like I said in my last room inspiration post, I am 100% team throw pillow and these 2 options are so cute for this princess and the frog design. I love the idea of using the green velvet and gold pillow on the cream accent chair to compliment the plush green bed blanket. For my second throw pillow, I would use this one on the bed to break up the yellow comforter and sham pillows while still tying in the green. Of course the frog is a nod to our princess’ wild bayou journey that led her to her prince.
Wall Art Piece
To jazz up the walls (see what I did there-JAZZ lol), I love this canvas art print of Jackson Square in New Orleans. The musicians playing on the street and the people enjoying the cafe brings out that happy-ending- type feeling when Tiana finally opens her restaurant. This print comes several different sizes but I think it would make a great focal art piece for this space.
Decor Pieces
The decor pieces for this space is where I really played up our other favorite characters of the story.
Frog Jewelry Box
This adorable frog on a lilypad jewelry box gives us our second frog element for the design to compliment our throw pillow we found above. This little accent piece is great for holding jewelry or small valuables in a dedicated location. The movement in the details of this item nods to the wild bayou adventure our frog protagonists take to try and return to human form.
Alligator statue Key Bowl
This is another item storage option that throws in our favorite jazz musician alligator, Louis, to our bedroom design. My intention with having both the frog on a lilypad jewelry box and this alligator bowl is that they could be used as “His and Her” small storage items on the nightstands next to the bed. The gold color ties into the floor lamp we mentioned above and again adds some special shine and glam to the design.
Blue and Yellow Glass Bottle Vases
Our last decor piece in this set of decorative glass vases in blue and yellow tinted glass added as a call back to the one and only Mama Odie and all her voodoo priestess powers. This set from amazon comes with 4 different designs that can be paired together with flowers for a decorative statement, maybe on top of the dresser, or separated throughout the space to add some additional pops of color in the room.
Structure Level Design Ideas
If you want to dig a little deeper and realize the full scale dream of this Tiana inspired bedroom, here are some structural level design elements you can also incorporate to your space.
Sage Green Wall Paint
I do not typically like to go too spot on when putting together a design but this sage green wall paint was perfect enough for Tiana’s room in the movie and it also would be beautiful to complement this homeward-bounding Tiana inspired bedroom in real life. I think light green is such a peaceful and calming color, which is exactly how you want your bedroom to feel each night.
Vintage Brown Thin Brick Wall Tiles
New Orleans is famous for its beautiful and historic brick buildings and these thin brick veneer tiles are an easy way to bring some of that French Quarter charm into the space without all the mess and weight of real brick. Though these may look like a standard clay brick, these tiles are actually flexible enough to use on curved walls, easy to cut with no fancy tile tools, and are water and heat resistant. If you are not sure about the color or how the texture will look in real life, you have the option of a 2 piece sample first to see if you want to commit to the product.
Green Glass Flower Pendant Ceiling Light
We have now unfortunately come to the end of our beautiful Princess and the Frog bedroom design but we finish up this room with a fabulously unique light fixture that ties in Princess Tiana’s iconic green gown. This green glass pendant light is in the shape of the flower petals around the skirt of Tiana’s dress. If you are designing the bedroom from the studs out, I think it would be amazing to set light boxes where this pendant light could be hung above each night stand.
Summary of final design
What did you think y’all? I think this design is going to take you all the way there, whether your going down the bayou, stomping the streets of New Orleans, or resting your sweet head in a beautiful bedroom fit for a princess.
