No One Works from Home Like Gaston

Like any Millennial woman, Beauty and the Beast was one of my favorite Disney Movies growing up. As a quirky, bookish brunette myself, Belle and I were kindred spirits. I day-dreamed on the regular about one day being able to turn down the town stud and having my own Gaston obsess over little ol’ me (I realize now that maybe this wasn’t the best inspiration I should be taking into my adult life lol).

Fast forward 30 years and I am now married to my very own prince charming, who is fortunately nothing like Gaston (though I think my hubby’s just the cutest in town). My Gaston fixation is now limited to visits to Gaston’s tavern at Walt Disney World for massive, gooey cinnamon rolls and La Few’s Brew.

While standing in line for those delicious cinnamon rolls during our last Disney World visit, I had the random thought about what Gaston would be like if he lived in the modern day. Of course, Gaston would probably be a boss-closing million dollar deals and soaring up the corporate ladder- while hunting large game on the weekends. My inspiration for this design is creating Gaston’s modern day classy, yet still manly, home office.

Color Scheme and Mood

  • Colors: White, Warm light neutrals, dark bronze, black, gold, and dark wood tones
  • Mood: Masculine and rustic while still a little bougie.

Staging Level Design Ideas

To start our home office for the modern day Gaston, we will focus not only on creating a connection to our beloved villain through finishes and color but we also want to ensure our key pieces provide the level of function and storage needed to efficiently tackle any work project. Key elements to build this design, therefore, will revolve around furniture options. We will then add decor and wall art to really drive home that manly glam Gaston is all about.

Desks

The desk is the foundational piece of any home office. It needs to be functional most importantly but this piece sets the stage for the style of a modern and manly workspace for Gaston.

Middle Range Size Options

No products found.

This is a great middle size option if you are looking for more storage features within reach. This desk has 5 drawers-one of which is a filing drawer- as well as a dedicated cabinet with shelving inside.I love the trim details on the drawer and cabinet fronts along with the dark stain. If you want even more storage, there is also a module of this desk with a top hutch. You can find that version here:

Small Space Option

If your office or work space is not a dedicated room or you live in an apartment with a dedicated work area, this small space desk provides loads of storage and includes surface organization options in a single unit. Though the desk is a more simple black finish, the wood grain comes through adding a higher quality look at a great price. The bronze, vintage cup-pull style hardware adds that sophisticated, study flare to this budget and space friendly piece.

Chairs

With this moody room design, I love the idea of bringing in some warmth and coziness with a rich camel, leather style finish chair. Here are 2 great options to fit our Gaston-inspired office.

Option 1

This is a great chair for a smaller desk or working area. The gold finishes add a glam factor to the chair without tipping it too feminine. The stitching and slight tufting in the cushion add the right amount of character to complement the subtle lodge feel of the overall design.

Option 2

If you would like a more ergonomic option while still pulling in the warm richness of a leather like finish, this is a great option. The adjustable headrest and thick seat cushion provide more lasting comfort if your work requires longer stints of sitting. The stitching details on the seat back add the masculine flair needed for a kingpin like Gaston.

Storage and Accent Pieces

To round out the furniture pieces of this office design, you can add additional storage and accent options depending on the specific needs for your work space. You can play with the staging of these items to create a built in storage look or use the accents for client seating during in office consultations.

Bookcase ~ Option 1

This bookcase provides lots of functional and decorative office storage at a great price. The black wood grain finish and metal shelves provide a simple design that allows any decor, books, or awards to be the real star. The shelves are adjustable giving you great flexibility and the lower drawer can be used for filing documents. If your space and budget allows, you can purchase multiple units of this bookcase to create a built in storage look without it feeling too heavy in the design as a whole.

Bookcase ~ Option 2

This bookcase and storage cabinet is a great option for a more solid look that you can arrange to have a built in bookcase design. It has adjustable shelves and a lower cabinet with an additional adjustable shelf. What I really love about this bookcase is the details! The diagonal wood slats and metal brackets on the cabinet doors really mimic a modern take on the wall details of Gaston’s tavern from the movie. It’s an easy, non-structural nod to this character’s favorite hangout.

Accent Chair

As a splash of style that really screams Gaston’s tavern chair from the movie, you can add an accent chair like this one! The details of this chair are amazing with the rustic wood tone structure, burlap backing, black nailhead trim, and high wingback design. This would be a very interesting and unique option to use for any guest or client seating in your office space.

Decor Pieces

Mixing and matching decor pieces like the ones below can connect symbols and imagery in subtle ways to Gaston’s character. This is where you can really have fun adding nods to our favorite paragon.

Rug

A rug is another great way to add some warmth and Gaston’s rugged style in a modern way. This 100% acrylic faux fur rug pulls in those elements of Gaston’s love of hunting in an animal friendly and durable way. A great modern detail of this rug is the gold accents sprinkled throughout that give a little bougie touch to a rustic rug. There are several colors of this rug available that could work for this design but my favorite is the Mocha because it brings a lot of texture in the contrast of the dark, middle, and light tones.

Bookends

These bookends are beautiful with their dramatic contrast of the rich camel brown and cream color. The pattern and movement pulls through the same feeling as animal fur and the rug selected above. They are also made real onyx white gives a feeling of luxury with a small and functional detail in the design.

Horse Statue

Gaston definitely felt he was the knight in shining armor of this story with Belle and the Beast. This abstract and modern horse statue represents that sense of Gaston’s confidence in his reputation and self-image. The texture of this statue and variation in color is beautiful and when paired with some of the more modern elements of this design brings in a more rustic feel which ties back to the feel of Guston’s tavern in the movie.

Arrow Lamp

Gaston was a master of many weapons as a game hunter. Throughout the movie, we see Gaston yielding a bow and a quiver full of arrows as he seeks to save his beloved Belle. I love this table lamp as a fun and functional decor piece that pays respect to Gaston’s prowess as a hunter. This lamp can allow for extra working light if needed for your workspace or to create a more relaxing mood for a reading arrow when you want to unwind after a long day.

3 Deer Heads

I am so obsessed with these plaster animal head wall decor! If my vision of this design I would hang all three of these in a gallery wall set up. The different finishes between the white/gold/black, monochromic black, and shiny gold give a great level of interest while providing a modern recreation of the animal head walls of Gaston’s tavern. Adding even just one of these to your home office design really plays up that Gaston feel withl a simple and really inexpensive art piece.

Framed Tree Picture

One of the most prominent pieces of Gaston’s favorite tavern is the huge portrait of himself hanging for all patrons to admire. Though it would be super fun to have a Gaston style self-portrait painted to hang in a home office, this picture plays into the woodsy background of his infamous painting in the movie. I love the size of this wall art for the price and the ornate frame and array of mody colors pull into the other elements of this design perfectly.

Structure Level Design Ideas

If you want to go bold with your design, the ideas and supporting products in this section are focused on some cool do-it-yourself structural features to round out the overall Gaston-inspired look.

Trim

Pre-stained Panels for an accent wall or half-wall height paneling

One of the key features of Gaston’s tavern that drives home the rustic, French Provincial aesthetic in the wood trim elements throughout the space. From the detailed beams and plank wainscoting, the rich wood details bring a lot of character to the space that introduces our villain in the movie. If you want to add some wood elements to your office design, but without all the pain of staining, this pre-finished trim board would be an easy way to create a stunning architectural feature. I love the idea of creating a half-wall wainscotting by placing these shiplap, tongue and groove style boards vertically and capping it with the available straight edge trim board. You could also create a stunning accent focal wall for behind the desk space so you have a high-interest but still neutral backdrop for virtual meetings. These light-weight and easy to cut boards are kiln dried to avoid warping and shrinkage making them a great option for a do-it-yourself project.

Mounted lighting fixtures

Antler Chandelier

Another stand out design feature of Gaston’s tavern is the giant antler chandelier! If you have a centered lightbox available in your work space, one of these antler chandeliers would be a stunning option to add even more character to your space. My favorite chandelier option to add a more modern and glamorous detail to this design is the gold and glass antler fixture. This provides an interest contrast to some of the rustic elements. If you want  to break up some of the dark tones of the design but still want that realistic antler look, you can install the all white fixture. This version would stand out even more against a dark painted ceiling (see below for my suggested color for this design choice). If you want a more traditional antler look without swaying to the woodsy cabin vibe, the third option with its black metal fixture base would be a good choice for you.

Wall Coverings and Paint

The French Provincial interior design style pulls a lot of influence from textures from the countryside-rustic woods, stone, and warm tones. There are painting techniques that you can apply to your walls to get the rich, creamy stone look you see in the town buildings in Beauty and the Beast, including a creamy white or beige Lime Wash finish. Home improvement stores now have great options like this pre-colored lime paint that make the process of completing this beautiful, high end stone like finish even easier.

Paint for deeper, moodier look

If you want a bold contrast from your warm, creamy wall color and want to bring an even moodier feel into the space, you can use a rich bronze paint color like Espresso Bean by Behr to paint your ceiling or trim. I especially love a bold ceiling choice with a stand out light fixture or if you have already installed crown molding in the space. If your office or workspace does not have a ton of natural light to counteract this deep hue, you can also select a lighter mocha-brown color for a ceiling or trim and that would still complement the overall feel of the design with creating an uncomfortable space to work in.

Conclusion

This was a really fun space to dream up since I really enjoy thinking how my favorite story characters would live and thrive in our modern world. I think no matter the size of your space or the level of design you want to commit to, these options can be mixed and matched to create a perfect office for the Gaston-loving home worker!
